Andrea Alciati's emblem collection, printed by Christophe Plantin at Antwerp in 1581 with Claude Mignault's Latin commentary and woodcuts cut by Geeraard Jansen van Kampen, made for humanist readers of allegory. The 261 square scenes—birds in trees, armed men, drowning figures, fighting beasts—sit inside strapwork borders with herms, satyrs, cartouches and fruit swags usable as frames on their own.
