Af-beeldinghe van d'eerste eeuwe der Societeyt Iesu: voor ooghen ghestelt door de Duyts-Nederlantsche provincie der seluer societeyt
A Dutch-language emblem book marking the first century of the Society of Jesus, compiled by Jesuits of the Flemish-Dutch province, including Bolland, Henschenius, Tollenaere and Poirters, and printed at the Plantin press in Antwerp in 1640 for Jesuit readers and patrons. Each engraving sets a small landscape or narrative scene — shepherds, a bridge under attack, peasants brawling, a wayside statue — inside heavy auricular cartouches of curled strapwork, shells, grotesque masks and lion heads, useful as ready-made ornamental frames, mask motifs and vignette scenes.
