Comstock, Joseph · 1840 · Hartford: : [s.n.] · 31 pictures

Joseph Comstock's 1840 Hartford compendium of natural philosophy, antiquities, magic, and medical curiosities, issued cheaply for general American readers. Small relief-cut vignettes, heavily hatched and framed by black borders, show shipwrecked sailors, torchlit cave burials, robed mourners, and figures around fires in a vaulted interior — useful for stark silhouettes, dense line texture, and narrative tableaux.
