Imago primi saeculi Societatis Iesu
A Latin emblem book marking the first hundred years of the Society of Jesus, compiled by Jesuit scholars including Johannes Bolland and printed in 1640 at the Plantin press in Antwerp for the order's own commemorations. The engravings set small allegorical scenes—trees, fires, furnaces, figures in colonnades—inside heavy auricular cartouches of scrolled shellwork, grotesque masks, winged herms and fruit swags, giving designers ready-made frames, borders and mask ornaments in dense black line.
