Gilbert, Emile, 1836-1914 · 1880 · Paris, Savy · 1 picture

A French historical survey of love philtres, charms and poisons from antiquity to the modern era, written by the physician Emile Gilbert and published in Paris by Savy in 1880 for medical and antiquarian readers. The single indexed image is not a text illustration but a Yale University Library bookplate: an engraved plinth of stacked books topped by the university shield with Hebrew lettering, a banded Latin motto, and letterpress withdrawal and transfer stamps below, useful as heraldic ornament, ownership-mark lettering, or a model for institutional labels.
