AntonI Sucquet e Societate Iesu Via vita aeternae: iconibus

Sucquet, Antoine, 1574-1627?, Bolswert, Boëce van, ca. 1580-1633, ill · 1620 · Antuerpiae : Typis Martini Nutij · 37 pictures

A Latin Jesuit meditation manual, Antoine Sucquet's Via vitae aeternae, printed by Martinus Nutius at Antwerp in 1620 with 32 engraved plates by Boëtius à Bolswert, made for readers following a structured course of spiritual exercises. The plates stack heaven, earth and hell in one frame: ranks of angels and radiant clouds above, panoramic landscapes with harbours, roads and towns in the middle, and flaming pits, demons and skeletons below, with lettered keys tying figures to the text and small inset roundels a designer can lift as standalone vignettes.
