An emblem book of biblical meditations by the Spanish humanist Benito Arias Montano, printed by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp in 1583, with plates after Pieter van der Borcht engraved by Pieter Huys and Jan Wierix for learned Catholic readers. Dense line engravings pair Latin verse captions with crowded scriptural scenes: muscular nude figures, Christ carrying the cross, anointings, ruins and townscapes behind.
