Veridicus Christianus
Veridicus Christianus is a Jesuit emblem book by Jan David, engraved by Theodoor Galle and printed by the Plantin office in Antwerp in 1606 for Catholic readers meditating on Christian conduct. The copperplates set allegorical scenes among figures in ruffs, doublets and broad hats, keyed with letters A–F and often carrying Latin banderoles, with smaller vignettes framed in windows or landscape distance; useful for radiating-eye and rayed-light motifs, deathbed and skeleton imagery, crowd groupings, and lettered diagram conventions.
