Cartoons from the "Hindi Punch" : 1904.
An annual gathering of political cartoons from the Hindi Punch, a Bombay bilingual comic weekly modelled on London's Punch, published in 1904 for an English- and Gujarati-reading Indian public. The drawings are pen-and-ink line work reproduced in halftone: allegorical female figures in saris, winged angels and helmeted Britannia-types, squat caricatured officials with oversized heads, labelled money bags and scrolls, and cross-hatched landscapes of rubble and famine, useful for figure allegory, satirical type, and hatching texture.
