The Life and Adventures of Valentine Vox, the Ventriloquist.
A comic picaresque novel by Henry Cockton about a ventriloquist's pranks, issued in 1844 by the Philadelphia firm Carey & Hart for a popular English-language readership. The etched plates are oval and vignetted scenes of crowded early-Victorian life "tavern rooms, street mobs around a horse, parlour scuffles, a levee of men in court dress" with fine hatched line and open white margins, offering period costume, gesture and crowd-staging reference.
