ERIC · 1870 · 3 pictures
The 1870 annual report of the United States Commissioner of Education, submitted to the Secretary of the Interior in Washington for Congress and school officials, with appended papers on schools for freedmen, American Indians, the deaf, kindergartens, and foreign systems. Its plates are statistical: outline state maps stippled with grids of small black squares standing for counts of schools or pupils, and dense letterpress tables of figures with rotated column headings and hairline rules.
