Guilielmi Gilberti Colcestrensis, medici londinensis, De magnete : magneticisque corporibus, et de magno magnete tellure; physiologia noua, plurimis & argumentis, & experimentis demonstrata
William Gilbert's Latin treatise on magnetism and the earth as a magnet, printed in London by Peter Short in 1600 for natural philosophers and navigators. The woodcut diagrams set instruments into the text block: a graduated semicircular arc, a suspended needle in a boxed frame, fine radiating hatch lines, and numbered degree scales useful as technical ornament.
