Florence home needle-work
An annual instruction booklet issued by the Nonotuck Silk Company of Florence, Massachusetts in 1887 to promote its embroidery silks to home needleworkers, combining pattern directions with plates of finished samples. The engravings are close-up views of knitted, crocheted and lace fabric rendered as dense black-and-white stitch texture, with scalloped and fringed edges and lettered keys (a, b, c, d) tracking rows, useful as repeating ground patterns, border strips and halftone-like texture fills.
