Le Sphinx des glaces
Jules Verne's 1897 Antarctic adventure novel, a sequel to Poe's Arthur Gordon Pym, issued in Paris by Hetzel with illustrations by George Roux for a general French readership. The nine plates are wood-engraved scenes of sailors on deck and on rocky shores, built from dense black hatching against blank sky and sea, useful for silhouetted figure groups, rigging details, and stark cave and cliff framing.
