Antoine-Joseph Dézallier d'Argenville's biographical dictionary of famous painters, printed in Paris by De Bure in 1745 with engraved portraits by Etienne Fessard, aimed at collectors and connoisseurs of drawings. Besides the portrait plates, the pages carry woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and inhabited initials built from acanthus scrolls, shells, urns, ribbons and hatched grounds, useful as ornament stock and letterforms.
