Academy notes
Academy Notes for 1875, edited by Henry Blackburn and published by Chatto and Windus, is an annual pocket guide reproducing the paintings hung at the Royal Academy's summer exhibition for London gallery-goers. The 199 illustrations are small pen-and-ink reductions of oil paintings, numbered to the catalogue: cottage interiors, seated women sewing or reading, groups gathered around a table, biblical and classical figures, all built from dense hatching that turns tone into visible line.
