A Dutch-language Jesuit emblem book issued at Antwerp by the Plantin press in 1640 to mark the Society of Jesus's first century, with verses by Adriaen Poirters and designs after Abraham van Diepenbeeck, aimed at devout readers of the Flemish-German province. Each engraving sets a small landscape, biblical or allegorical scene inside a heavy auricular cartouche of scrolls, strapwork, grotesque masks, winged cherub heads and shell forms, giving designers ready-made ornamental frames that can be emptied and reused around type or images.
