A German alchemical treatise by Giovanni Battista Birelli, translated and edited by Peter Uffenbach, printed at Frankfurt am Main by Niclass Hoffman in 1603 for practitioners of the art. The plates here are letterpress ornament rather than illustration: strapwork and foliate headbands with grotesque masks and putti, and heavy blackletter initials caged in white scrollwork, useful as borders, rules and drop caps.
