The Alfred jewel: an historical essay
John Earle's 1901 antiquarian study of the Alfred Jewel, published by the Clarendon Press for Oxford scholars and readers of Anglo-Saxon archaeology, with the Ashmolean Museum holding the object. Line engravings show the pear-shaped jewel front and back, its cloisonné figure holding two flowering rods, filigree beasts and scale patterns, plus carved interlace borders useful as Anglo-Saxon ornament sources.
