Alle de wercken, so ouden als nieuwen
A folio collected edition of the emblem books and moral verse of the Dutch poet and jurist Jacob Cats, printed in Amsterdam by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in 1658 for a broad Protestant readership of households, courting couples and moralists. The 306 copper engravings are circular scenes set into square plates with hatched or strapwork corner spandrels and blank banderoles: courting pairs in ruffs and wide hats on riverbanks, town silhouettes behind, shipwrecks, throne-room judgments, and small emblematic objects laid out in the foreground.
