Johann Georg Sulzer's alphabetical encyclopedia of the fine arts, published in Leipzig in 1771 with music articles by Kirnberger and Schulz and plates by Daniel Chodowiecki, written for German readers, artists and students of aesthetics. The pictures reproduced here are engraved music examples on ruled staves—treble and bass systems with figured-bass numerals, accidentals, whole notes and beamed runs—usable as texture, ornament borders, or fragments of notation for typographic and print-inspired work.
