An alphabet of history
An illustrated alphabet of historical figures, with comic quatrains by Wilbur D. Nesbit and drawings by Ellsworth Young, issued in 1905 by Paul Elder of San Francisco for adult readers amused by potted biography. Each letter gets a heavy pen-and-ink figure in a tall bordered panel beside a large display initial, useful for drop caps, single-figure silhouettes, and dense crosshatched shading.
