Alphabets
An album of alphabets and initials issued about 1860, probably in Berlin, and held by the Clark Art Institute Library; the sheets are working patterns for embroiderers marking linen and monograms. The 323 plates are blue outline drawings on thin paper, each letter built from ribbon-like strokes edged with rows of dots and scallops and sprouting five-petalled flowers, buds and tendrils — usable as script monogram templates, ornamental borders, or line motifs for stitching and lettering.
