Alps and sanctuaries of Piedmont and the canton Ticino

Butler, Samuel, 1835-1902, Streatfeild, R. A. (Richard Alexander), 1866-1919 · 1913 · New York, E. P. Dutton & company · 83 pictures

Samuel Butler's account of walking tours among the mountain sanctuaries of Piedmont and Ticino, illustrated by Butler himself and reissued in 1913 by Dutton in New York under R. A. Streatfeild's editorship for general English-speaking readers. The plates are pen-and-ink landscape sketches on tinted paper, built from short hatching strokes and stippled clumps of foliage, showing hilltop chapels, walled villages and terraced slopes under skies ruled in thin horizontal lines, useful as line-art topography, textured hillsides and small architectural silhouettes.
