American architecture

Schuyler, Montgomery, 1843-1914 · 1892 · New York, Harper & Brothers · 79 pictures

Montgomery Schuyler's 1892 collection of critical essays on American architecture, issued by Harper & Brothers in New York for an educated general readership following the building boom in eastern cities. The plates are pen-and-ink elevations and partial views of masonry commercial blocks, townhouses and civic buildings, cropped to show corner bays, oriels, rusticated stonework and round-arched openings — useful for hatching technique, architectural detail vocabulary and vertical panel compositions.
