American art and American art collections; essays on artistic subjects
A two-volume subscription set of essays on American painters, etchers and private collections, compiled by Walter Montgomery and issued in Boston by E. W. Walker & Co. in 1889 for art buyers and cultivated readers. The 450 plates reproduce American paintings and original etchings and pen drawings: tonal wood-engraved pastorals with cattle and river bends, single figures in sunlit fields, and loose crosshatched storm and shipwreck scenes, useful for landscape tone, hatching textures and period costume silhouettes.
