The 445 plates are soft tonal reproductions of paintings and drawings — herders with cattle in open fields, a frontier captivity scene in rocky woods, riders in a mountain pass, a packed tavern interior — usable for grainy figure groups, landscape backdrops, and engraved caption lines beneath the image.
