American caricatures pertaining to the Civil War
A 1918 Brentano's volume reproducing American lithographed political caricatures of the 1850s and 1860s, issued in New York for collectors and students of Civil War printmaking. The plates are outline lithographs in which frock-coated politicians, soldiers and enslaved figures stand on bare ground under balloons of hand-lettered dialogue, offering speech-bubble layouts, crowd groupings and cheap-print line shading.
