American masters of painting : being brief appreciations of some American painters illustrated with examples of their work
Charles H. Caffin's short critical essays on American painters — Inness, Whistler, Wyant, Martin and their contemporaries — published in London by Richards in 1903 for general readers and collectors of contemporary art. The 33 plates are halftone reproductions of oil paintings, mostly landscapes and nocturnes lent by private owners, printed in warm grey ink with soft edges and heavy shadow, useful as atmospheric tonal backgrounds, sky and cloud textures, and silhouetted tree masses.
