American masters of painting : being brief appreciations of some American painters ; illustrated with examples of their work
Charles H. Caffin's set of short critical essays on American painters, published by Doubleday, Page in New York in 1918 for general readers and art students. The 37 plates are halftone reproductions of paintings — tonalist landscapes with low horizons, bare trees and heavy skies, plus portraits and figure studies — useful as soft grey washes, atmospheric backgrounds and silhouetted tree masses.
