American painters : with one hundred and four examples of their work engraved on wood
George William Sheldon's survey of contemporary American artists, published by D. Appleton in New York in 1881 for art collectors and gallery-goers, pairs biographical essays with 104 wood engravings after paintings by Bierstadt, Church, McEntee, Casilear and others. The plates are tonal landscape reproductions — broad cloud-filled skies, silhouetted pines and elms, distant mountain ranges, small figures at lakeshores — printed with engraved captions naming subject and painter, useful for atmospheric backgrounds, horizon bands and framed-plate layouts.
