American painters of yesterday and today
A privately printed survey of American painters by Frederic Fairchild Sherman, issued in New York in 1919 for collectors and connoisseurs. Halftone plates reproduce tonalist landscapes by Dwight Tryon and contemporaries — hazy tree lines, low horizons, marsh and water — yielding soft grey gradients, blurred silhouettes and captioned plate blocks usable as atmospheric backgrounds or texture.
