American painters of yesterday and today
Frederic Fairchild Sherman's 1919 volume of short essays on American painters, privately printed in New York for collectors and connoisseurs of the period's landscape and figure painting. The plates are halftone reproductions of paintings in private hands — tonalist woods, marshes and farm fields by J. Francis Murphy, Winslow Homer and Dwight Tryon — with soft grey gradients, dense tree masses against pale sky, and small-caps captions crediting artist and owner beneath each image.
