American pictures and their painters
A survey of American painting written by Lorinda Munson Bryant and published by John Lane in New York in 1917, intended for general readers and students following the country's painters museum by museum. The 230 plates are halftone reproductions of oils, heavy on tonalist landscapes, portraits and figure groups, printed with deep blacks and hazy middle tones that suit use as soft atmospheric backgrounds or grainy monochrome textures.
