Literary essays on Dryden, Shakespeare, Lessing, Rousseau, New England witchcraft and manners, written by James Russell Lowell and published by J. R. Osgood in Boston in 1873 for general readers. The scanned images are not text illustrations but ownership marks: an oval "University Library. Of California." handstamp in several inkings, paired in one case with an interlaced publisher's monogram reading "and Co.", useful as models for oval stamp frames, worn letterpress lettering, and tangled initial ciphers.
