Analysis of ornament, characteristics of styles; an introduction to the study of the history of ornamental art
Ralph Nicholson Wornum's survey of ornament by historical style, published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1879 and grown out of lectures for art and design students. The plates are wood-engraved line drawings of border strips, capitals, rosettes, arabesques and foliate scrollwork labelled Greek, Saracenic, Gothic or Renaissance, offering flat repeatable motifs and clean outline patterns for reuse.
