The analytical theory of heat
Alexander Freeman's 1878 Cambridge University Press English translation of Fourier's 1822 treatise on heat conduction, issued for British mathematicians and physicists. The plates here are letterpress mathematical display equations — stacked nested radicals, negative exponentials, Greek psi functions and series expansions — usable as specimens of nineteenth-century scientific typesetting, or as abstract line-and-symbol texture.
