The anatomy of pattern
A design primer by Lewis Foreman Day, published by B.T. Batsford in London in 1894 for art students, draughtsmen and manufacturing designers learning how repeats are constructed. The plates are black-and-white repeating patterns — ogee medallions, diagonal lattices, interlacing strapwork and vine scrolls — several drawn partly in outline or with handwritten notes exposing the underlying grid, useful as ready-made tiling repeats and as diagrams of repeat geometry.
