Ancien Japon
A French-language reference work on old Japan compiled by Georges Appert with Hiroji Kinoshita and printed in Tokyo by Kokubunsha in 1888 for European readers studying Japanese history, law and heraldry. The plates are numbered grids of family crests printed in red outline — chrysanthemums, paulownia, bamboo, cranes, coins, waves and commas — each fitted to a circle, hexagon or lobed frame, giving designers a ready catalogue of compact radial monograms and geometric badge shapes.
