Ancient and modern gold and silver smiths' work in the South Kensington Museum
A South Kensington Museum handbook to its gold and silver collection, written by John Hungerford Pollen and printed in London in 1878 for museum visitors, students of design, and working metalsmiths. The line engravings isolate single objects against blank ground cups, chalices, reliquaries and plate with knops, tracery and chased ornament drawn in clean outline, giving designers ready-made silhouettes and repeatable ornamental units.
