Andreae Alciati emblematvm libellvs
Andrea Alciati's emblem book, first assembled in 1531 and issued here in Latin by Chrétien Wechel in Paris in 1536, with woodcuts credited to Jollat, addressed to humanist readers who paired each motto and epigram with its picture. The 116 small blocks show mythological figures, animals, trees and hilltop towns in outline with sparse hatching, each self-contained in a square frame — a source of compact allegorical figures, emblem borders and stock landscape backgrounds.
