Andrea Mantegna and the Italian pre-Raphaelite engravers

Hind, Arthur Mayger, 1880-1957 · 1911 · New York : Frederick A. Stokes company · 74 pictures

A study of Andrea Mantegna's engravings and those of his fifteenth-century Italian contemporaries by Arthur M. Hind, print curator at the British Museum, issued in New York by Frederick A. Stokes in 1911 for collectors and students of early prints. Seventy-five full-page halftones reproduce line engravings: bacchanals and sea-god battles of nude figures, mourning groups around Christ, and figures in coffered Renaissance interiors, all built from dense parallel hatching that designers can lift as ready-made tonal texture.
