Anecdotes of painting in England : with some account of the principal artists, and incidental notes on other arts
Horace Walpole's history of painters and engravers working in England, compiled from George Vertue's notebooks and reissued in 1826 by John Major for London collectors and antiquaries. The plates are wood-engraved bust portraits of seventeenth-century artists, set on irregular hatched shadow patches, with long hair, falling collars and cloaks rendered in dense parallel line.
