Anecdotes of painting in England : with some account of the principal artists, and incidental notes on other arts
Horace Walpole's history of painters and engravers working in England, compiled from George Vertue's notebooks and reissued in 1826 by John Major with James Dallaway's notes, for antiquaries and collectors. The plates are small wood-engraved head-and-shoulders portraits copied from earlier paintings, faces built from close parallel hatching and tight curls of periwig, useful as cut-out vignette heads or ornament stock.
