Anecdotes of painting in England : with some account of the principal artists, and incidental notes on other arts

Walpole, Horace, 1717-1797, Vertue, George, 1684-1756, Dallaway, James, 1763-1834 · 1826 · London : Printed at the Shakspeare Press, by W. Nicol, for John Major · 21 pictures

Horace Walpole's history of painting in England, drawn from George Vertue's notebooks and edited by James Dallaway, reissued in 1826 by the Shakspeare Press in London for collectors and antiquarians. The plates are small wood-engraved head-and-shoulders portraits of painters and patrons in periwigs, built from dense parallel hatching against bare paper, useful for silhouetted vignettes and line-texture studies.
