Anecdotes of painting in England : with some account of the principal artists, and incidental notes on other arts
Horace Walpole's history of painters, engravers and gardeners working in England, compiled from George Vertue's notebooks and reissued with James Dallaway's notes by the Shakspeare Press in London in 1826 for collectors and connoisseurs. The plates here are small wood-engraved bust portraits of periwigged artists, cut off at the shoulders against hatched or blank grounds, with heavy curl-by-curl line work useful for vignette heads, spot portraits and hatching textures.
