Animal locomotion, or Walking, swimming, and flying, with a dissertation on aëronautics
James Bell Pettigrew's 1874 treatise on animal locomotion and aëronautics, issued in New York by D. Appleton for naturalists and the first generation of readers studying mechanical flight. Wood-engraved line figures show wings in successive positions, birds seen head-on and from above, insect and fish outlines, and screw-and-wing machines, all keyed with italic letters and small arrows that suit diagrammatic layouts and motion-study borrowings.
