Les antiquités d'Herculanum : avec leurs explications en françois
An engraved survey of the paintings and objects unearthed at Herculaneum, cut by François-Anne David with French explanatory text by Sylvain Maréchal and issued in Paris in 1780 for antiquarians, collectors and working artists. The plates isolate Roman wall figures against black grounds inside ruled and patterned borders: friezes of draped women, dancers, cupids and satyrs, plus small groups seated among columns and single animal vignettes, giving designers cut-out figure silhouettes, repeating border strips and ready-made frame devices.
