A Latin Jesuit meditation manual, Antoine Sucquet's Via vitae aeternae, printed by Hendrik Aertssens in Antwerp in 1630 with engravings by Boëtius a Bolswert, made for devotional readers working through spiritual exercises. The 23 plates are dense allegorical scenes keyed by letters to the text, combining a guardian angel and a pilgrim figure with hell-mouths, deathbeds, palm-lined roads, tents, radiant clouds of saints and small vignettes of trades, useful for engraved emblem motifs, winged figures, monsters and diagrammatic letter keys.
