Apelles symbolicus, exhibens seriem amplissimam symbolorum, poetisque, oratoribus ac verbi dei praedicatoribus conceptus subministrans varios
A two-volume Latin emblem handbook compiled by Joannes Michael von der Ketten and printed in Amsterdam by the Janssonio-Waesbergios in 1699, supplying preachers, poets and orators with ready-made symbolic images. The small square engravings pair landscapes, fountains and ruins with fires, phoenixes, faces in clouds and cloaked observers, offering dense line hatching, black silhouetted foliage and compact emblem framing.
